plot ideas
     demands of the qun
01. loss of control

Some potential Inquisitor dialogue where (depending on how you read it) they wave away Bull's concerns about being out of control backfire - he tries to bury his concerns about himself which either makes his fear/need to find a sense of control start to show in ways he doesn't see coming, or leads to him snapping in exactly the way he was afraid he would. I'm not sure how dark I want to get with this - probably not very, since there's a lot of ways this could go that Bull wouldn't be able to come back from and I'm not quite up for that.

02. alternate quest
I would love the Demands of the Qun quest itself to play out differently. Straightforwardly deciding to leave the Qun would be way out of character for Bull, so the way the game did it where he got to take a sort of baby step toward rebelling by just choosing which set of orders to follow was a good choice, but let's be real that quest was boring, Bull deserves more drama. Let's find some other way to do it that lets Bull pretend he's not outright denying the Qun but gets kicked out anyway. Could be tricky to figure out but if you're okay with a lot of brainstorming and want to try this let me know and we can figure something out.

03. poison h/c

The saar-qamek the assassins got Bull with has side effects even with the antidote making it non fatal. This would probably be pretty much h/c unless you wanted to introduce some other plot element to it, which could be fun. Bull trying to get some kind of important stuff done while trying not to look like he’s losing his shit sounds like my idea of a good time.

04. a/b/o au

While I don't always click with a/b/o, I love how it would force Bull to confront the way he deals with his own instincts and needs, especially after leaving the Qun when he would have to face a rut or heat on his own for the first time, without whatever safeguards the tamassrans would have put in place. Bull as an omega would let me play around with the part of him that needs authority and orders to follow, how he interacts with authority, what it would take to get him to trust someone else’s strength that way. Bull as an alpha would let me play around with his fear of his own aggression. I like the idea of both, and they both would let me see what, if anything, it would take for Bull to actually ask for help with his own needs. Just let me know which you’re in the mood for.

05. post-trespasser bad end

Okay so I haven't finished playing Trespasser yet, but the situation I'm thinking, in broad strokes: The Chargers died years ago. The Viddasala's dead now, too. And Hissrad is still alive. What would it take to bring the Iron Bull back from that? Let's explore it. The only thing about this one is that Bull's not going to be feeling too chatty, so it's possible there will be times the other character's really going to have to drive a lot of the conversation. Still, if you're up for that, let's try it.

     alternate universes

modern au:

01. super secret spy drama

Modern technology lets the Qun keep a closer eye on Bull, and they always put their foot down before he can decide to go around telling everyone that he's a spy. Does that take a toll on him? What does that toll end up looking like to people who don't know where it's coming from? Under what circumstances might the Qun test him like they might or might not have done in canon, and how vindictive would they be about kicking him out? Getting exposed as a spy would have some particular effects in a modern au that it might not have in the less organized, less digital fantasy land of canon. What does that look like?

At the very least everyone he knows feels varying degrees of betrayed, he's out of a job, and also he may or may not be on the hook in most of the other nations of Thedas for treason. He might also distance himself from the Chargers so they don't face the kind of social/legal repercussions he's facing, so he might need legal help, help with money, and/or a place to stay. There's a lot of leeway with that though, so we don't have to write Bull having legal/housing/money issues at all if it would bother you to write/read about any of that. We can take it in whatever direction you want. I would mostly use those issues to give someone Bull lied to a reason to interact with him, so as long as we can get the two characters doing stuff together we'll be good.

02. slice of life/fun with worldbuilding/whatever

It doesn't have to be all drama - I also would love to play around with, say, what their jobs would be, bull wearing booty shorts, someone figures out how to recreate ancient-dragon pheromones and Bull loses his shit for a while, whatever. I'm kind of fond of the idea of Bull running the Chargers while moonlighting as an exotic dancer, I think he'd have a good time with that.

Maybe we can dip our toes into some politics stuff too, if you're in the mood for it. Maybe in a modern-ish version of Thedas the Qun's started to try and get with the times and now generally interprets the 'conquer and convert' part of their manifesto in a different way. They now lean more in a 'domination via cultural and economic influence' direction, and are trying to quietly sweep the more violent parts of their international reputation under the rug. What Bull gets sent over to the mainland for here is something we can brainstorm about - is there still room for Seheron as it is in canon in this version of things? Does Bull get sent over in some PR stunt to be a part of some international cooperative program, or do we just want to take the whole spy thing in a different direction? Or would something else be more fun? idk, tell me your thoughts. If there's anything else you'd have fun with in a modern AU let me know.

sci-fi:

01. space: the final frontier

So maybe I don't have any specific plot ideas, and maybe I don't have the level of encyclopedic knowledge about Star Trek that I'd need to be comfortable figuring out the details of this AU by myself, but if you don't think Klingon spy Bull would be the tightest shit...

medieval-ish/fantasy aus:

01. minotaur

Bull ends up in another dimension due to rift shenanigans, people there assume he's a minotaur and shove him in a labyrinth somehow and in comes character B, there to either fight the beast or be sacrificed to him. Bull's hungry, angry, uncomfortable, whatever, depending on how long he's been there, but eventually he starts talking and the other character realizes he's not a monster and maybe breaks him out? The details depend on what other canon we'd be working with, but it could be fun.

02. mostly gen Witcher-adjacent incubus au

Hear me out. What interests me about this isn't the smut aspect - I'm not opposed to smut, it's just that sex scenes tend to bore me unless there's character-relevant stuff happening, I'm more interested if they're a part of a larger narrative - it's the fact that a lot of times when you see a succubus, especially in the Witcher games, they're women, and Bull's appearance being so easy to translate into what the Witcher games show succubi as looking like makes me want to play around with cultural expectations here.

Do people tend to assume Bull's some other kind of monster when they see him, because they're so used to their sex-monsters being designed with the presumed straight male audience in mind? Is there any awkwardness, confusion, or denial when people find out what he actually is? This version of Bull would probably try to defuse some of his fights with friendliness or flirting if he can - would that be a confusing reversal of expectations for whoever was trying to kill him? Would the whole encounter end with the monster the character had been sent to kill convincing them to sit down with him while he gives them relationship advice? Does having to keep himself semi-separate from civilization so he doesn't get hunted down take a toll on someone as social as Bull, especially when his literal life depends on his ability to make connections with people? I don't know, let's discuss it. There could be some things to have fun with here.

03. bull's a dragon

I mean. I had to include this one, right? I figure he was maybe raised by the Chargers and, when he started to grow up and word got around that this particular mercenary company had a dragon, too many people started trying to challenge the whole company so they could get the glory of killing a dragon and Bull had to leave. So he enjoys attacking cities and causing chaos, kind of needs it, but without the excuse of 'I'm just doing it as part of a mercenary job', doesn't often find a way to meet that need in a way that he finds morally acceptable, so he's kind of lonely and frustrated. Maybe he meets another character, rescues them from something, shenanigans ensue? Maybe later on he gets turned into a humanoid dragony form, and then we can have fun with that? I don't know, let's see where this one takes us.

04. dragonriders of pern

Or some AU based on it. My Pern knowledge was never encyclopedic and I'd have to refresh my memory on a lot, but how excited Bull would be about all of it would be so much fun to write. If you like to brainstorm and know Pern stuff hit me up and maybe we can come up with something to do with this.

     memes

     sex and/or shippy stuff

misc:

01.
this is a vague one I guess, unless you want to figure out how to write a threesome

This could be gen too, putting it in the shippy section because the only specific example I can think of is in a romantic context.

Bull's pretty invested in being The Guy Who's Okay With Everything. In the real world this tends to end up with that person feeling obligated to stay in some uncomfortable, unhappy situations, because everyone has boundaries even if they want to pretend they don't. Let's figure out some way to make Bull work on this part of himself.

The thing that made me think of it is the way that in every threesome fic I read with him, he ends up being shunted off to the background and not really paid attention to while the story focuses on the other two characters, and while that's something he'd totally allow to happen, I always want the plot to go somewhere with it. Not sure if a new-threesome relationship is a viable thing to play in RP where there are probably only going to be two of us playing it out, although if you'd like to try let me know. But that's the kind of vibe I'm thinking of.

02. domdrop

Bull a. doesn't like asking for help, prefers to deal with his problems privately, and b. prioritizes the needs of others over his own. I could see that leading him toward some bad bdsm practices, ie not communicating when he's not quite in the right headspace for this or that type of scene, or whether he's just feeling low afterward - either immediately or over the next day or so, or both. If the sub didn't need the same kind of aftercare he needs (idk, cuddling maybe? washing them off/general caretaking?) or if Bull just needed reassurance that the other person enjoyed it that he ended up, for whatever reason, not getting, I could easily see him not saying anything about that and just letting it not happen, which would probably make things worse.

He's probably pretty good at brushing aside any attempts to ask after his mood and, once that's out in the open, what he needs to help him get back onto an even keel. If anyone noticed and tried to help him, I anticipate him being sort of a dick about it and making it a bit of a pain in the ass. Let's play that out! Sounds fun.

03. petplay

So all my knowledge about petplay to write this kind of thread would have to come from internet research, I don't have any experience with it, but the moment I heard that professionally made petplay toys can include dragon tails, I knew Bull would be into it and knew that I would absolutely love to play this out.

I haven't decided whether getting into this headspace would be silly or serious for Bull. He certainly wouldn't do it with someone he didn't see as powerful enough to control him, and he'd have to have been close with them long enough to trust them with that kind of control, because I think he'd bring a few other kinks into it - the threat of violence (if not actual fighting), power play, etc. The whole process could tie into his need to feel like that powerful, dangerous part of him was safe, like someone is capable of making him into something safe.

That said, I think I'd want to straddle the line with this of touching on those serious deep down needs he has and just the sense of fun he'd get out of it, so. Idk. We can work it out.

Dorian/Bull:

01. little post-Trespasser thing

After Bull rejects the Viddasala's order to betray the Inquisition Dorian can ask Bull if he's okay, and Bull plays it cool. Dialogue with Cole, though, can reveal the moment hurt Bull more than he let on, and I'd like to play out Dorian's reaction on hearing that. If this was played out by itself it might be pretty short, which is cool with me but we could also fold this into another plotline or something if we want it longer. I just like opportunities to practice getting my head around Bull's... particular way of handling his own emotions and how that effects his relationships with people who want to help him.
  • Cole: Words like a whip. An old name burns like a broken dreadnought. The Iron Bull, you're hurt.
  • Iron Bull: The Iron Bull is just fine. When this is over, drinks are on me. Probably a lot of 'em.

02. Burly Qunari Pirates

There's a line somewhere where Dorian indicates that he's read some kind of trashy novel about burly qunari pirates. This is one hundred percent something Bull would be happy to do some sexy roleplay of with Dorian, and playing out their first attempt at it, when they might not totally have the formula down or be used to doing it, sounds like it could be a blast.

03. Bull embarrasses Dorian

Dorian can make a comment, if the Inquisitor asks him why he didn't tell them about his relationship with Bull, where he says he likes Bull in the same way that he likes Ferelden beer. I'm interested in exploring that. I feel like Bull probably embarrasses Dorian for what he's decided is Dorian's own good, but does that cause problems? Is it something they end up needing to talk about, for one reason or another? Idk, I have no specific plot ideas for this one, but contact me and we can brainstorm something.

04.
one (or both) thinks the other is dead

This could play into a larger plot or just be a nice shortish little thread of its own, either way I love the idea. Playing with that tricky, not always obvious way that Bull expresses strong emotion, or might shut down in the face of it, is something I want to do more of, and let's be real the drama is pretty delicious. Especially with a big helping of h/c afterward.

05. long-distance relationship

Something set post-canon exploring what a long distance relationship would be like for the two of them could be fun, either with or without sending crystals (or before and after they get some). Maybe we write the letters they send first, then transition to writing out them making magic-phone calls.

Bull's 'I want to talk about my feelings' that Dorian imitates in Trespasser could be fun to include in this. Something about the phrasing doesn't feel exactly like Bull's own words, like Bull went and asked someone else for romantic-relationship advice, and my guess is that Dorian being so far away with only letters to talk to him with made Bull reassess a few things and ask people what he should do about how he was feeling. So I'm guessing the 'talk' might consist of him putting into specific words exactly how he feels about Dorian, and a little bit of what he might want out of their relationship. After we've played out some of their letters to each other it could be fun to play out this conversation, especially because talking about what he wants/needs would be a big deal for Bull, even if he's thinking about the whole thing partly in terms of 'what does Dorian need to hear'.

06.
retired together

Dorian and Bull have decided they're too old for their dangerous lives and retire together, trying to break whatever habits they formed during their decades-long long-distance relationship to get used to the daily annoyances and negotiations involved with spending so much time with just one person living in your personal space. Something tells me, too, that traditional retirement might be hard to get used to for them, since they're both so used to having important goals to work toward. Do they try to get used to all that free time, or do they go out and cause trouble? Or a little of both?

07. arranged marriage AU

Under what circumstances might this have happened? Peace treaty between the Qun and Tevinter (probably one that neither side really intends to respect) and there's just some mixup where the 'vints believe Dorian's going to marry a woman? If we set this in the period of time after Bull burned out on Seheron but before they decided what other job he could do, it wouldn't be a stretch to say they'd pick him (in which case the effect Seheron and reeducation had on Bull might come up, but let me know if you'd rather it didn't). God knows what would have to happen to even get Dorian there though, especially if we don't want this to get too dark (although how dark we'd want to go with it might be something to talk about). So there might have to be some brainstorming for this one. idk man let me know your thoughts about what might be fun to do here, it could be a good time.

08. beauty and the beast au

I'd like to adapt this one to make it fit each of their individual issues/life situations, but I don't really have the details worked out. If Bull's the beast in this situation, maybe that ties in somehow to how he feels about being tal-vashoth, and magic shenanigans have him literally turning into the monster he thinks tal-vashoth are?

Or if Dorian's the beast - idk, maybe something playing into that fear of temptation of his? Or maybe some AU where he agreed to marry Livia, either because his father's fucked up plan (for some limited period of time because I'd like the possibility of a happy ending, and either with or without unforseen side effects) worked, or he was convinced to agree for some different reason?

Or maybe both Bull and Dorian have beast shit going on at once? Either way, I'd love to see True Love help save either one or both of them from metaphorical-or-literal monstrous transformations. Feel free to come at me with something completely different too, I'm up for looking into whatever form this AU could take.

09.
not-totally-healthy inquisitor/dorian

A couple points in the romance-Dorian path which may not have been written with this intention nonetheless make me wonder if Dorian's not a little bit vulnerable to emotional manipulation - even, or maybe especially, accidental - from a romantic partner, and I'm interested in exploring that.

If we take things like the Inquisitor, despite Dorian's wishes, forcing their way into using their influence to get Dorian's family crest back and getting an apology from Dorian afterward, and the (maybe a coincidental result of the conversation being mapped out the way it was, but interesting) way the player gets more overall approval from Dorian after Last Resort of Good Men if they trick Dorian into going and then apologize, we might be able to extrapolate a relationship where the Inquisitor's opinions, goals, and desires ultimately hold a lot more sway than Dorian's.

(There's also a scene here that I'm not sure whether to mention where, in a conversation about Dorian going back to Tevinter, the Inquisitor can say 'I need you here'. Dorian calls that out as emotional blackmail and then immediately walks it back, says he was joking - this one really does depend on how you read it, but I personally read it as 'that comment absolutely was emotional blackmail, or was at the very least the Inquisitor showing a tendency to leverage guilt to try and get their way, and a part of Dorian thinks so too but he doesn't want to call it what it is because he doesn't want to make trouble with the man he loves.' Again it depends on interpretation both of the comment and Dorian's reception of it, but this just helps demonstrate the kind of relationship dynamic I'm imagining for this particular plot.)

Maybe it's accidental -  maybe Dorian continues the trend of apologizing at times when I personally feel he shouldn't and of trusting the intentions of people he cares about even when their actions conflict with his express desires, and then the Inquisitor just isn't savvy enough about relationship dynamics to notice that they're always getting their way while Dorian very seldom does. Maybe that has some effects on Dorian or their relationship - a lot of that depends on how the other player sees things and how they're interested in playing this. I feel like a dynamic like that is one that Bull would pick up on and, depending on what he saw, one he might have opinions about.

This one would require some planning, and potentially playing the Inquisitor as an NPC, although if we plan out what's going to go down we can probably handwave a lot of their involvement if we decide to. I don't have a lot of specific ideas for how I want this to go down, but the kinds of things that happen probably depend on how angsty we do or don't want to make the whole thing, it all depends on what you're up for.

10. misc. fanfic continuation

There are absolutely some AU fics where Dorian and Bull meet in some different way pre-game and they end before we get to see the two meet up again in the Inquisition, and I always end those desperately wanting to know how that would change things. If you'd like to play out some sort of alternate dynamic that follows up from something like this let me know and I'll go looking through my bookmarks and dig something out. Or is there any other fic you'd like to elaborate on? This is just for us to have fun so fuck it, if there's any fic-verse you'd like to play in for a while let me know and we can talk it out.

     general ideas
01. prompt generator

02. amnesia

My first thought is, Bull forgets everything after some point early in his Ben-Hassrath training, before he knew Common as fluently as he knows it now, before he got all those scars, before he went to Tevinter, let alone Seheron, before he left the Qun. It could be fun to explore how much he's changed in that time. But we can change it up to make it as dramatic as the characters and setting can make it, message me and we can brainstorm something!

03. asking for help

Please someone force this man into a situation where he has to accept that not asking for help with his problems, or even admitting to them, can hurt either A) himself, or B) his relationships with the people he's close to. We can work out the details based on what kind of thing you're in the mood for, especially since this can be combined with other plot ideas

04. identity

I feel like there are a lot of things - big things, little habits - that Bull started doing purely because it helped make his role as The Iron Bull seem more trustworthy and convincing.

Since that's me setting parts of canon next to each other and gluing them together with common sense, rather than something the game ever explicitly states, it's never something we see addressed in canon, but considering what the Qun is and what they do to their members Bull deserves a period after leaving where he reassesses his sense of himself, his mannerisms, his habits. What parts of the Iron Bull persona does he genuinely connect with for his own sake? What parts are there purely for show, and does he want to keep them? Are there things he never let himself do or emotions/opinions he never let himself express because they were more Hissrad than Iron Bull? What are the obstacles to letting himself express them now? What would it take for him to start thinking about this, and how might that change his behavior? How would people who already know and like his Iron Bull role react when he starts trying to change it?

We can talk about how to make this happen and what plot we can use to give them something to do along the way, but it's something I'm really interested in exploring.

05. language

Qunlat! I love Qunlat. I've written a whole google doc from the fanwiki's Qunlat page that takes everything there and guesses at the meaning of the parts that don't have a direct translation. Bull does not like explaining translations in straightforward, direct ways, which makes playing with this tricky. Let me do something with Qunlat.

- tower of Babel style magic shenanigans that force characters to speak in their first language while trying to accomplish some other task together (If you let me play this one and practice my Qunlat guesswork I'll be grateful to you forever.)

- a simple conversation about the language, someone asking questions about it or wanting to learn it for themselves (this would be especially interesting if Bull's a tal-vashoth when they talk about it, since I have a headcanon that I feel is supported by what we know of Qunlat that you can only really properly speak it - at least, the version Bull's used to, as I'm sure vashoth have their own dialect - if you're in the Qun)

- another tal-vashoth Bull one here. Some kind of forced interaction with tal-vashoth/vashoth culture would make Bull confront some of his conflicted feelings about himself and how he relates to them, his guilt and anger and resentment and attachment to certain ideas, and all that fun stuff. This might work best with a vashoth Inquisitor I guess?

06. sort of truth spell

For Reasons some kind of spell or spirit makes emotional repression impossible. Every emotion has to be expressed right when it happens, or controlling them has some kind of difficult side effect. Bull would hate it! :D Alternately, a straight up truth spell with maybe some 'ix-nay on the emotional repression'. The details are flexible. (This could work for plot 2 though, couldn't it? Let's force this man to talk about his problems.)

     etc

These ideas are only Bull-centric by the necessity of not knowing what character he might interact with, so if there's something else you'd like to do please message me (no matter how long it's been since this blog has been active - you never know, I might be around) and let me know!

If you just want to try out their CR and see where it goes there's always [community profile] bakerstreet's weekly texts from last night meme, that can be a good simple way to get a feel for things, and sometimes even to establish plot points that we can play with later on. Whatever. Let me know.

I tend to do best with PSLs that we've plotted out, but if we've done that and you'd like to plop a starter into this blog somewhere, my PSL post is here.
